Department of vegetable and alternative crops
About
The main research conducted at the Department of Vegetable and Alternative Crops is vegetable and alternative crop breeding, the development of new cultivars and hybrids of vegetables and alternative crops, the development of cultivation technology and seed production.
The vegetable crop genetics and breeding program consists of:
- development of genotypes of vegetable crops with high nutritional value and wide adaptability, suitable for open-field or protected space production
- development of vegetable cultivars and hybrids highly tolerant to biotic and abiotic stress
- development of specific cultivation technology suitable for different production systems and uses
The alternative crop genetics and breeding program includes:
- breeding sorghum cultivars and hybrids for herbicide resistance
- breeding high-yielding, high-quality and adaptable varieties of industrial hemp, pumpkin and squash, millet, buckwheat, phacelia, flax and tobacco
- research on medicinal, aromatic and spice plants and their products
- research related to genetics, physiology of growth and development of vegetable and alternative crops
The vegetable and alternative crop seed production includes monitoring, approbation, processing and packaging.
The vegetable and alternative crop growing technology includes the development of cultivation technology, timely sowing and planting dates, as well as using adequate cultivation practices, mineral fertilization and plant protection.
Plant material quality control includes analyses of field, vegetable and alternative crops and products in the Institute laboratories.

Dr. Milica Aćimović (née Babić), Senior Research Associate. She started working at the Institute in May 2016, where she is engaged on improving production and processing of medicinal herbs. She earned master’s degree in 2008, and PhD in 2013. She has authored or co-authored over 200 bibliographic units, out of which she has published 27 references during the work at the Institute, including four chapters in monographs of international importance.

Dr. Janko Červenski, Principal Research Fellow, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia
Dr. Janko F. Červenski, Principal Research Fellow. He was Head of Department of Organic Production and Biodiversity from 2012 to 2013, when he was appointed Head of Vegetable Crops Department. He obtained his MSc in 1996 and defended his PhD thesis in 2001. He is engaged in cultivation practices and breeding of brassicas and peas, seed production and vegetable growing technology. He authored over 250 research and technical papers, co-authored a textbook and three national monographs. He participated in or coordinated over 13 research projects. Dr. Janko Červenski coordinated an interregional IPA project with Hungary – FARMADDINC (2013), participated in IPA project with Croatia – IMPACT ENVI (2017), and participates in IPA project with Hungary – AGRINNO (2018). He authored or co-authored several vegetable cultivars. He is the national coordinator for the genus Brassica within the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECP/GR). He speaks fluent English and moderate Russian.

Organizing pepper breeding program, sowing, crossing, selection and harvest plan. Planning, organizing, and participating in field and greenhouse trials. Postharvest pepper fruit evaluation. Controlling genetic purity of pepper breeding materials. Promote commercial pepper varieties and other vegetables. Data analysis.

His main field of research includes Allium and Cucurbitaceae breeding. He graduated from the University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Agriculture in 2012, and completed his master’s studies in 2013. He is currently finishing his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Agriculture, Novi Sad. He participated in several national and international conferences, authored or co-authored 70 research papers in national or international journals. He speaks English.
