Laboratory for biotechnology
About
Biotechnology laboratories were first established at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in the early 1980s, for the purpose of application and development of tissue culture techniques and molecular methods. Micropropagation, embryo and anther culture, as well as various marker systems thus became an integral part of Institute research and breeding programs, conducted on wheat, sunflower, rapeseed, sugar beet, soybean, maize, and other crops.
More than 30 years of research in biotechnology carried out at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops resulted in an idea to unite biotechnology workforce into one organizational unit. The idea was put into practice on 1 April 2012, which marked the establishment of the Biotechnology Department. During the first five years, research team of the Biotechnology Department achieved significant results by participating in national and international projects, completing doctoral studies, attending training and specialization programs, and authoring research papers published in national and international journals. Following the reorganization of the Institute on 1 February 2017, researchers employed at the Biotechnology Department were allocated and assigned to work in various Institute departments according to their area of expertise.
Biotechnology Laboratory was reestablished following the subsequent Institute reorganization in November 2020. The most sophisticated equipment and highly educated research staff were reunited in the Biotechnology Laboratory with an aim to control genetic purity of seed material and assist in the development of top-quality NS cultivars and hybrids. Research and development activities of the department aim to support the current breeding programs and offer solutions for critical issues in breeding and seed production, as well as improving production, storage and processing of the most important crops.
Researchers
Dr. Ankica Kondić Špika, Head of Laboratory for biotechnology
Dr. Ankica Kondić Špika, Principal Research Fellow, born in 1971 in Novi Sad. She graduated at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad in 1994, on Field and Vegetable Crops. Received her Master’s degree at the same faculty in 1999 on Genetics and Plant Breeding. She performed one-year specialization in the field of molecular biology and plant transformation in the period 2000–2001 at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, India. Defended her doctoral dissertation from the same field in 2005 at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad. She was a participant of the course: “Regional training course on cytogenetics and in vitro techniques in mutagenesis of crop plants and radiation-mediated reconstruction of plant genome”, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Sofia, Bulgaria (2-13 November 2009). From 1995 to 2001 she worked at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, as a scholar of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Serbia. Her employment as biotechnologist at the Institute started in 2001 at the Department for Small Grains. She was the project manager of two national projects and coordinator of the team from the Institute in five international projects from different programs (FP7, COST, EPPN, EMPHASIS). She is a member of Editorial Board of national journal “Ratarstvo i povrtarstvo”, as well as of international journal “Genetika”. Authored and co-authored more than 260 scientific papers, co-authored one monograph and a chapter in a monograph of national significance. She was head of Department for Biotechnology in the period 2012-2017. She is the head of Laboratory for Biotechnology within the Department for Small Grains since February 2017.
